As a mindless TV junkie, I was both intrigued AND horrified when the TLC hit show “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” ran promos promising to reveal the pint size pageant queen mom’s “forklift foot”.
First, what is “forklift foot”? Well….
In the episode they reveal that, “Mama” aka Honey Boo Boo’s mother, was involved in a forklift accident several years ago in which her foot was ran over, leaving it deformed. So, today, I thought I’d provide a few safety tips so you never have to experience the horror of “forklift foot” for yourself…
Your feet are used to perform a variety of work-related tasks, such as climbing ladders and operating machinery, yet some people neglect their feet by being careless on the job. For example, they jump off of forklift or other moving equipment, don’t wear the proper footwear, or don’t watch where they walk.
As a result, feet or ankles may wind up with sprains, fractures, and other serious injuries that can keep a person off the job and result in lost income for days or even weeks or months. Amputation may occur if a loose pants leg or shoelace gets caught in moving parts or if your feet are crushed by machinery.
Knowing how to avoid injuring your feet will help prevent serious incidents that can linger with you the rest of your life.

“On Your Marks” is an annual charity event supported by the ASDA Supermarket chain in the UK. This event gives people the chance to ride around Bruntingthorpe’s Proving Grounds in anything from supercars to some of ASDA’s own fleet of articulated lorries!

According to this article from “The Pallet Truck Shop” based in the UK, Ideal Stelrad Group has made great strides in reducing the carbon footprint of their manufacturing facility by over 300 tons just by implementing the use of pallet trucks and making modifications to their forklifts. AMAZING!
Being Safe in the Moment isn’t just a mantra here at MH Equipment – We live it and breathe it every single day. If you have watched any news at all in recent weeks you know the whole country has been under an intense heat wave, and only in the last few days have we felt any relief at all. It appears we are on track for one of the hottest summers on record, and with the temperatures soaring, it’s important to protect yourself against heat related illnesses.
Heat exhaustion and other heat related illnesses don’t just happen to people who are outdoors. The heat can also take it’s toll while indoors, for example, while in a garage working on equipment, in a warehouse moving boxes, or in a factory working the assembly line.
Heat related illnesses can strike anybody, but people who have other health conditions, the very young, and the elderly are most susceptible. It’s important to protect yourself, take precautions, and know the signs and symptoms of heat related illnesses so you don’t become one of the thousands of Americans each year who are affected.
Here are a few easy tips to help avoid heat related illnesses this summer:
• Drink plenty of fluids and avoid sugary or alcoholic drinks.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
• Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat and sunscreen.
• Take frequent breaks in a cool area.
The symptoms for being over-heated can include:
• Heavy sweating
• Muscle cramps
• Cold clammy skin
• Fast shallow breathing
• Dizziness or fainting
• Nausea or vomiting
• Hot, dry skin
• A weak and rapid pulse
• High body temperature
• Disorientation or confusion
If you feel like you are having any of these symptoms or notice someone around you with these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
It’s better to be safe than sorry. Keep an eye on your co-workers and don’t ignore the warning signs, and as always, BE SAFE IN THE MOMENT!
NACCO Materials Handling Group is pleased to announce the introduction of the new UTILEV® range of forklift trucks. This range of forklift provides an attractive option for users across many industries who require materials handling equipment, but don’t need advanced functionality or attachments.
These IC-powered counterbalance lift trucks offer a no-nonsense, uncomplicated approach to materials handling, providing affordable, reliable and cost-effective solutions in applications where materials handling equipment is required to work intermittently during the working week. Tier 4 Interim is the USA’s, Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new set of regulations for off-highway diesels. These regulations require large diesel engines to meet new standards.
In order for manufacturers to meet the regulations they must cut Particulate Matter (PM) by 90%, and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) by 45%. This means manufacturers will have to develop significantly cleaner engines that are more fuel efficient and cleaner burning.
Not only has Hyster met these regulations, the next generation of Hyster big trucks are cleaner, quieter, more responsive and significantly more fuel efficient by up to 30%.

In January 2011 the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set their new emission regulations for off-highway diesel engines. The new regulations affect heavy machinery such as tractors, wheel loaders, excavators and forklifts. The EPA first launched regulations on the 130-560kw diesel engine category. They then introduced the same regulations for the 56-129kw diesel engines a year later.
The new requirements mean that diesel engines must cut Particulate matter (PM) emissions by 90%, an emission composed primarily of carbon soot and other combustion by-products, and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) by 45%, an emission composed of nitrogen and oxygen. This means manufacturers will have to develop significantly cleaner engines that are more fuel efficient and cleaner burning.
The emissions standards for these power categories are: 2.0g/kW-hr Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) and 0.02 g/kW-hr Particulate Matter (PM).
What’s interesting is that carbon dioxide (CO2) is not actually regulated in the Tier 4 Interim regulations, but it looks like manufacturers are rising to the challenge. Cummins QSB and QSL engines are more fuel efficient by up to 15% and hence result in substantial CO2 reduction.
In 2014, the EPA will introduce Tier 4 Final which will require another major emissions reduction for off-highway diesel engines. Tier 4 Final will first come into effect on the 130-560KW engine category, requiring a further 45% NOx reduction. This will result in a total emission reduction of 90% NOx and 90% MP compared with Tier 3 Standard. These extremely low levels can be described as “near zero” emission levels according to Cummins.
The emissions standards for this power category are: 0.4g/kW-hr Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) and 0.02 g/kW-hr Particulate Matter (PM) effective January 2014.
There are 3 key approaches for meeting the Tier 4 Interim emissions standards. Here’s how they work:
Hyster have worked closely with Cummins to meet Tier 4 Interim standards. Cummins QSB and QSL engines feature particulate filter exhaust after treatment system and a cooled Exhausted Gas Recirculation (EGR) system.
Here is a summary of the enhancements and changes that Hyster and Cummins have made to meet Tier 4.
Cummins engines utilise cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), allowing for cleaner combustion with NOx reduced by 45%, efficiently recirculating exhaust gas and lowering combustion temperatures.
The key components of the Cummins cooled EGR system are:
EGR Valve, EGR Cooler and Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGTTM).
The Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) uses a sliding nozzle, which controls the exhaust flow into the turbine wheel; delivering rapid boost at lower engine rpm and then maintains high boost at higher rpm. The system also incorporates a larger and smaller turbocharger in a single unit, achieving significantly improved response.
The Cummins EGR system not only meets emission standards, it also increases engine performance and improves fuel efficiency significantly.
Cummins Particulate filters reduce Particulate Matter (PM) emissions by 90%. It replaces the Tier 3 muffler, providing equal if not better sound reduction. The Particulate filter collects carbon and other soot on the walls of the filter. The filter also has self-regenerating features; when sufficient exhaust temperatures are met the filter oxidizes particle matter.
Cummins air filtration works as a 2-stage system with Sy-klone per-cleaner removing up to 80% of contamination in the first stage. After the pre-cleaner stage the Cummins Direct FlowTM air filter removes the remaining particles.
Developed specifically for Tier 4 Interim to provide more performance with a lower profile design saving up to 50% more space. The air cleaner uses a highly-efficient coalescing filter and crankcase ventilation system manufactured by Cummins Filtration. Air flow to the engine is improved with almost 100% efficiency over the life of the filter.
The filter also features temperature barometric and atmospheric pressure sensors that provide data to the engine control module. A secondary safety filter is also fitted, that ensures protection of the engine if the main filter becomes compromised.
Another requirement of Tier 4 Interim is that the crankcase emissions be eliminated. Cummins achieved this by using a highly efficient coalescing filter. The filter returns the oil to the crankcase, and also provides the benefit of removing oil mist and small oil droplets, resulting in an even cleaner engine and powertrain.
Cummins Tier 4 Interim engine management system has been significantly upgraded, fitted with the latest electronic control module the CM2250. The new model provides 3 times faster processing power and the double memory capacity, in comparison to the Tier 3 models.
One of the most exciting features that the new Tier 4 Interim Hyster range has is operator controlled selection of performance modes ECO-elo (fuel efficiency) or HiP (high performance)
The normal operating mode is set to HiP (high performance), but when ECO-elo mode is turned on the maximum engine speed is reduced and the engine response becomes less aggressive, resulting in reduced fuel consumption with barely noticeable performance loss.
This system will be combined with Hyster advanced cooling on demand and alternate engine idle speed, load sensing hydraulics, and RPM management, which contributes to additional fuel savings of up to 15%.
Key features: Hyster trucks with Tier 4 Interim compliant engines can achieve up to 15% better fuel consumption, resulting in up to 30% fuel saving when combined with both Cummins and Hyster technology, while also providing significantly better engine response and reliability.
Below is a diagram from Cummins showing the difference between the Tier 3 engines and the Tier 4 Interim engines. As shown below the muffler is replaced by the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) which also acts as a muffler; plus the addition of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system.
Also seen below is the Cummins presumed solution to Tier 4 Final, with the addition of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) that is attached after the EGR.

Hyster Company donated the electric reach truck and Papé Material Handling, Inc. donated the battery and charging unit.
The Hyster® electric reach truck will be used in the museum’s storage facility to help move and store the valuable works of art displayed at the museum.

The origins of “The Thinker” statue date to 1880 when the French government commissioned Auguste Rodin to create a gate for a planned museum in Paris. He found inspiration in Michelangelo’s depiction of Hell in the Sistine Chapel paintings and in Dante’s epic poem “The Inferno”. Rodin created a prototype for a massive gate he called “The Gates of Hell”. It is two massive doors portraying condemned souls reaching up to the man called the “poet” who sat atop the gate, contemplating the condemned souls below. Paris never built the museum but Rodin never let go of the design of the man. Most residents in Louisville are not aware of the history and greatness of this piece of art. Its value is around $23M.
According the University of Louisville website, The Thinker statue that sits in front of Grawemeyer Hall is the first large-scale bronze cast of The Thinker. French sculptor Auguste Rodin personally supervised the casting in Paris. It came out of the mold Dec. 25, 1903, and was completed in early 1904. The Thinker design has been cast many times. Eight were made before Rodin’s death in 1917.
As the first large-scale Thinker ever cast, UofL’s Thinker claims priority as the most original.
Rodin sent The Thinker to the 1904 World’s Fair. It was owned privately in Baltimore and later was displayed in the Walters Art Museum there. When Baltimore purchased another Thinker, the museum sold the sculpture to the estate of lawyer and art lover Arthur Hopkins, which bought it for the city of Louisville. The city decided to put The Thinker at the University of Louisville.
The Thinker has sat in front of Grawemeyer Hall since 1949.
Chemical reactions of acids in rainwater with copper compounds in the bronze had turned our Thinker green. Between December 2011 and February 2012, conservators cleaned the corrosion and gave him a black-over-green patina similar to that on other versions of The Thinker.
MH Equipment’s Rental team, headed by Jill Marzian in Louisville, provided a forklift to assist in the move of the statue from its pedestal to a warehouse. There the statue was meticulously cleaned and restored. Jill said it was a real pleasure to work so closely with Methods & Materials and several professors of art and restoration from different areas of the United States on the project.
Jill was on-site from the beginning of the 5 hour move determining how the statue was mounted on the pedestal, making it safe to move, positioning and placing it on the pallet, and then moving it with the Hyster H50FT forklift.
