It’s always so great to see what the fantastic network of Hyster Dealers are up to. Kudos to Hyster and Papé Material Handling for your contributions and doing your part in helping share these works of art with your community!

Portland, OR. (May 14, 2012) – NACCO Materials Handling Group, Inc. (NMHG), in cooperation with its local dealer, Papé Material Handling, Inc. – Portland, has donated one of its Hyster® electric reach trucks to the Portland Art Museum. Hyster Company donated the electric reach truck and Papé Material Handling, Inc. donated the battery and charging unit.

The Hyster® electric reach truck will be used in the museum’s storage facility to help move and store the valuable works of art displayed at the museum.

“This is a small token of our appreciation that the Portland Art Museum brings to the community of Portland and the people of the Pacific Northwest.” said Jonathan Dawley, President of Hyster Distribution.

“Like our friends and partners at the Hyster Company, we too are members of this community and are happy to give back.” said Shirley Papé. “I am excited to know that it will be Papé products that are helping to share these works of art with members of our community.”

“We are very grateful to Papé and Hyster Company for this donation,” said Beth Heinrich. “They are both wonderful corporate citizens. Thanks to them, we will safely and confidently be able to move and lift precious works of art that we can share with our visitors.”

  • He’s the Real Deal!

The origins of “The Thinker” statue date to 1880 when the French government commissioned Auguste Rodin to create a gate for a planned museum in Paris. He found inspiration in Michelangelo’s depiction of Hell in the Sistine Chapel paintings and in Dante’s epic poem “The Inferno”. Rodin created a prototype for a massive gate he called “The Gates of Hell”. It is two massive doors portraying condemned souls reaching up to the man called the “poet” who sat atop the gate, contemplating the condemned souls below. Paris never built the museum but Rodin never let go of the design of the man. Most residents in Louisville are not aware of the history and greatness of this piece of art. Its value is around $23M.

According the University of Louisville website, The Thinker statue that sits in front of Grawemeyer Hall is the first large-scale bronze cast of The Thinker. French sculptor Auguste Rodin personally supervised the casting in Paris. It came out of the mold Dec. 25, 1903, and was completed in early 1904. The Thinker design has been cast many times. Eight were made before Rodin’s death in 1917.

As the first large-scale Thinker ever cast, UofL’s Thinker claims priority as the most original.

Rodin sent The Thinker to the 1904 World’s Fair. It was owned privately in Baltimore and later was displayed in the Walters Art Museum there. When Baltimore purchased another Thinker, the museum sold the sculpture to the estate of lawyer and art lover Arthur Hopkins, which bought it for the city of Louisville. The city decided to put The Thinker at the University of Louisville.

The Thinker has sat in front of Grawemeyer Hall since 1949.

Chemical reactions of acids in rainwater with copper compounds in the bronze had turned our Thinker green. Between December 2011 and February 2012, conservators cleaned the corrosion and gave him a black-over-green patina similar to that on other versions of The Thinker.

MH Equipment’s Rental team, headed by Jill Marzian in Louisville, provided a forklift to assist in the move of the statue from its pedestal to a warehouse.  There the statue was  meticulously cleaned and restored.  Jill said it was a real pleasure to work so closely with Methods & Materials and several professors of art and restoration from different areas of the United States on the project.

Jill was on-site from the beginning of the 5 hour move determining how the statue was mounted on the pedestal, making it safe to move, positioning and placing it on the pallet, and then moving it with the Hyster H50FT forklift.

The final results are amazing!  Take a look at these pictures from the University of Louisville website to see the final results.

  • MH vs. Hunger | The Battle Lines Have Been Drawn

In 2011 MH Equipment started a friendly competition between our branches to see who could collect the most non-perishable food items to their choice of local food pantries.  Our Battle of the Branches to Benefit Community Food Banks is now over and the winner of the coveted “Battle of the Branches” trophy for 2012 is Scott City who collected an astounding 209.7 items per employee!

We would also like to congratulate the Lexington branch for an amazing 2nd Place finish with 203.5 items collected per employee! Lexington was the winner last year and came very close to a repeat performance in 2012. Since the results for Scott City and Lexington were so close, The His First Foundation will be giving an $500.00 to the food pantries of their choice along with a pizza party for both branches.

In 2011, which was our first year, we collected 12,381 items company-wide to donate to our local food banks. This year we collected 24,359 items – a 97% increase over last year! AMAZING!

  • Driving Home the Importance of Forklift Safety

On May 17th 2012, MH Equipment’s Des Moines branch had the honor of hosting the Industrial Truck Association’s (ITA) OSHA Alliance Presentation entitled – “Forklift Safety: Operator, Machine, and Environment.”  The presentation was an overview of standard forklift safety, operation, mechanical, and regulation information for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Inspectors in Iowa.

In attendance were approximately thirty OSHA personnel, as well as numerous MH Safety and Training personnel. The meeting was a success, proving to be an enjoyable and educational experience for all.  The ITA Presenters, Bill DeVries and Mike Frasier, did an exceptional job presenting the materials and answering questions from the attendees.

From a personal standpoint, I thought it was interesting to learn how the Regulatory and the Industrial Truck Standards Development Foundation (ITSDF) affects the development of standards for the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and OSHA. It was also interesting to learn the different manufacturers’ positions on meeting these standards and on lift truck modifications.  The explanations regarding training, evaluation, retraining, and reevaluation were very informative as well. Seeing the Bureau of Labor’s data showing that almost 20,000 forklift accidents in 1995 dropped to less than 9,000 accidents in 2009 really drove home the benefits of operator training.

On a final note, I was thrilled with the opportunity to be a guest presenter for the ITA.  With the large number of OSHA personnel in attendance, the ITA representatives asked if I would be willing to help with the product overview and inspection presentations.  I had the honor of presenting the Class I counterbalanced electric product information to the group. The OSHA personnel had great questions and showed an exceptional knowledge of the equipment.

  • What is Your Forklift Fleet Costing You?

When it comes to optimizing and managing your fleet assets, the more information you have the better. And the better the information, the more effectively and efficiently you can improve your facility’s operating environment. Therefore, with optimal fleet solutions, you can reduce unnecessary capital expenditures.

A fleet management program typically includes reviewing your current material handling fleet to determine current expenses, analyzing those expenses and looking for opportunities for potential cost savings, reviewing recommendations for maintenance and/or replacement of equipment as well as training and financing options, implementing selected recommendations, and finally monitoring and reporting fleet progress to ensure that your fleet remains in optimal condition.

Having a fleet management program in place can help you increase productivity, improve asset utilization, and improve operator safety and accountability, all using intuitive web-based reporting.
