What Makes Ottumwa Home

Ottumwa grew along the Des Moines River in Southeast Iowa, developing into a regional center for rail transportation, manufacturing, agriculture, and commerce. Its river crossings and rail connections helped turn the community into an important link between Iowa farms, factories, and markets farther east and west.

Today, Ottumwa remains a hub for Southeast Iowa, serving surrounding communities with jobs, healthcare, education, retail, manufacturing, and services. Its history is visible in six historic districts, longtime industrial areas, and the landmarks scattered throughout Wapello County.

Industries That Move Ottumwa Forward

Manufacturing, food processing, agriculture, healthcare, and distribution remain important to Southeast Iowa.

Ottumwa’s economy has long been tied to the farms and agricultural production surrounding the city. Food processing and manufacturing grew alongside that agricultural base, creating facilities that move large quantities of products and materials every day.

Healthcare, education, retail, and regional services have broadened the economy, while Ottumwa’s location continues to make the city an important service and distribution point for Southeast Iowa.

MH Equipment supports the industrial side of that work with forklifts, heavy-duty material handling equipment, parts, service, rentals, and warehouse solutions designed to keep facilities productive.
