What Makes Erie Home
Erie sits on the shores of Lake Erie at the far northwest corner of Pennsylvania, the only Great Lakes port in the state. Named after Lake Erie and the native Erie people, this historic city was founded in the early 1800s. Thanks to its prime location, it rapidly grew into a vital manufacturing and shipping hub for the region.
Today, Erie is the fourth-largest city in Pennsylvania and the commercial center of a tri-state region that reaches into Ohio and New York. It is a working city with deep industrial roots, a busy bayfront, and a community that takes pride in making things and getting the job done.
Industries That Move Erie Forward
Erie County’s economy runs on a strong mix of manufacturing, healthcare, insurance, tourism, and agriculture.
Manufacturing has anchored the region for generations, and Erie still holds one of the highest concentrations of toolmakers in the country along with a major presence in plastics and injection molding. Locomotive production at the Wabtec plant continues a manufacturing legacy that stretches back more than a century.
Alongside its industrial base, Erie is home to a Fortune 500 insurer, large regional hospitals, and a growing tourism economy built around Lake Erie and Presque Isle. Together these industries create steady demand for the warehouses, distribution centers, and production floors that keep the region supplied.
That is where MH Equipment comes in. We support the operations behind these industries with the forklifts, service, and warehouse solutions that keep products moving from receiving to shipping.
Things to Do Around Erie
Erie offers Great Lakes scenery, a lively bayfront, and four seasons of recreation just minutes from the city.
Presque Isle State Park
A 3,200-acre sandy peninsula arcing into Lake Erie, Presque Isle is Pennsylvania’s most-visited state park, drawing more than four million visitors a year. It offers miles of beaches, trails for hiking and biking, fishing, boating, and some of the best sunsets on the lake. Start at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, the free gateway to the park, where interactive exhibits explain the peninsula’s wildlife and habitats. Climb the observation tower for sweeping views of Lake Erie before heading out to explore the shoreline.
Erie Bayfront
The waterfront is where the city feels most alive, especially in the warmer months. Walk the docks, watch the sailboat races, dine along the water, or take in the view from the Bicentennial Tower. The 187-foot tower rewards the trip with panoramic views of Presque Isle Bay, the lake, and the downtown skyline. The surrounding district has grown into a hub of hotels, restaurants, and event spaces, and golden hour near the docks is hard to beat.
Erie Maritime Museum
Housed in a former power plant on the bayfront, the museum tells the story of the War of 1812 on Lake Erie and the region’s seafaring history, including the U.S. Brig Niagara. Hands-on exhibits and restored vessels bring the Battle of Lake Erie to life, and visitors can step aboard the ships when they are in port. It is an easy, engaging stop that connects Erie’s industrial present to its deep roots as a Great Lakes shipping center.
Waldameer Park & Water World
A classic family amusement park and water park near the entrance to Presque Isle, with more than 100 rides, slides, and attractions. The park blends thrill rides like the Ravine Flyer II wooden coaster with family classics and kid-friendly attractions, plus a full water park to cool off on hot days. Admission to the grounds is free, so families can pay only for the rides and attractions they want, making it an easy outing for any budget.
Warner Theatre
A downtown Erie landmark since 1931, the Warner Theatre is one of only six Art Deco movie palaces of its kind still standing in the country. Commissioned by Warner Brothers and richly decorated with gold leaf, French mirrors, and crystal chandeliers, it was saved from demolition in the 1970s and reborn as a performing arts center. Today the 2,250-seat theater anchors the city’s downtown revival, hosting concerts, Broadway tours, and the Erie Philharmonic, which has called the stage home since 1974.
